Barnett Hill FAM (August 2024)

Nestled in the heart of the Surrey Hills, Barnett Hill Hotel offers a picturesque escape just outside London (only 40 minutes from London to Guildford station) and this stunning property was the location of our August fam.

As event managers, we know that choosing the right venue for corporate retreats and offsites is crucial to the success of any event. Our fam trip started on a Sunday afternoon when we invited our members to arrive and check in at 3:00 p.m. It’s so important to allow our members time to get to know properties on their terms. Whether they choose to use the spa facilities (this property has treatment rooms onsite), explore the gardens, have a drink in the bar, or enjoy their rooms, free time is a staple part of how we run our fam’s, and it’s essential.

As part of our agenda, we also scheduled a 45-minute discussion in one of the hotel’s fabulous meeting rooms to discuss AI in our roles as event managers. We often hold discussions as part of our agenda, which we love – it means our members are always kept up-to-date on key aspects of our roles (we are covering DE&I at our next fam, and we recently held a discussion in Monanco on sustainability).

After a few hours at their leisure, we met for a full site visit, drinks, and dinner with Sarah Houghton, Group Meeting and Events Sales Director (Alexander Hotels) and our host for our fam. Sarah has been with the Alexander group of properties for some time now and she knows the hotels and their capabilities inside and out. Dinner was lovely in the hotel’s main restaurant with very attentive staff and, as always, fabulous conversation all around life and events!

After what can be only described as the cosiest sleep ever in our super luxurious rooms, we invited our members to get up super early to participate in a yoga class. Weaving a wellness aspect into your events is crucial, and we loved our (very) early yoga class with Vayu Yoga “on the Hill” at Barnett Hill (get it?!). Lucy, owner of Vaya Yoga was an amazing instructor (who helped this yogi perfect a position I had been doing wrong for years) and it was just a perfect class to start the week. Lucy was amazing and Alexander Hotels have teamed up with this amazing yoga studio to offer Yoga classes for corporate groups and it just worked so well.
